MassINC names Ben Forman as new Research Director

BOSTON—Massachusetts’ leading non-partisan public policy organization has named Benjamin Forman Director of Research. An expert in urban affairs and economic development, Forman brings scholarship and integrity to a research agenda well known for its accuracy and objectivity.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Ben’s integrity, intelligence, and diligence join our team as we examine the most critical public policy issues facing the Commonwealth,” said Greg Torres, President of MassINC and Publisher of CommonWealth magazine. “Ben will bring youthful energy, fresh eyes, and a passion for thorough policy analysis to this important position.”

Forman joined MassINC in 2008 and has been instrumental in the organization’s work, having co-authored the Gateway Cities report, which described the challenges Massachusetts mill cities face connecting to the state’s new knowledge-based economy.

Continuing his extensive work in urban economic development and in particular Gateway Cities, Forman authored MassINC’s Going for Growth series, which outlined problems related to promoting both residential and business investment in Gateway Cites, and argued for innovative new approaches, particularly in state-funded development strategies.  Forman also led MassINC’s social and economic analysis of the City of Springfield, a report designed to lay the groundwork for a long-term growth strategy.

His Gateway Cities work is an application of the national urban policy perspective he gained as a research assistant at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC combined with his local experience serving as a Rappaport Public Policy Fellow in New Bedford.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Trinity College, Hartford, and a master’s degree in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
