MassINC, together with the MBTA Advisory Board, will host “Next Stop: A National Summit on the Future of Transit,” on May 18th at the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston.
The National Transit Summit, featuring Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff and the transit chiefs of the nation’s largest systems, brings together practitioners and policymakers, environmentalists and industry leaders to exchange ideas and forge a practical agenda for improving our transit systems and financing their sustainability to meet society’s needs now and for the future.
America’s network of transit systems is one of our most effective economic engines as well as a key component in the effort to reduce emissions that cause greenhouse gases. Yet, many of these systems, particularly those in our largest cities, are financially and physically distressed. Solutions to the financing and management of metropolitan transit are too often caught in the crossfire of local control and parochial politics, leaving little consideration for the innovative, broadly applied solutions that could enhance and sustain these resources throughout the country.
In addition to the dialogue with national transit leaders, the Summit will address the need for more coordinated engagement and awareness within the business community, transit riders, and elected officials. All of these stakeholders have a role in building consensus on how to maintain, enhance and preserve these essential public transportation resources.
